They’re checking for knives and guns at some of the larger stations. The transit police and NYPD officers are patrolling for perps.
The Guard always shows up when there are terrorist warnings or some kind of international incident that could make its way to NYC. It’s nothing unusual. The same thing when NYPD cars park in front of synagogues.
The subway is safe. I use it all the time.
