The Council’s well on the way to turning Burbank into a landlord’s paradise

Get ready for your future.

What with the Burbank City Council completely unwilling to act on any kind of mandatory set-aside rules for “affordable” apartments in future construction projects; as well as the same members’ inability to even discuss in public the idea of rent control in town — or, indeed, any form of renters protections at all; combined with the strong likelihood that both Glendale and Pasadena will soon be getting some effective rent control measures of their own; and factoring in the equally strong likelihood that Costa-Hawkins will soon become history, thus affording Los Angeles a large increase in its rent-controlled stock; the net effect of all of these big new and positive changes elsewhere will surely be one destructive, awful, horrible thing here

Which is that the City of Burbank will quickly become a desirable target for an immense amount of outside investment money seeking a safe place to build huge and lucrative apartment buildings. Burbank’s proud lack of any kind of renters protections will be seen as its No.1 selling point.

Is this really the Burbank you want? Get ready for it.
