Quote of the Decade

Or more like The Century. It’s perfect for now — things obviously never change.

The Burbank Library used to have a big collection of this old Californian, btw.

“In a country where business is dominant, business men must and will corrupt a government.”

–Lincoln Steffens

Used to.

They used to have a lot of things they don’t have now.

“As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.” H.L. Mencken, Baltimore Evening Sun, July 26, 1920.

      Ah yes, his beloved Booboisie.

Burbank Library btw still has its almost complete “Mencken Collection” of books that was assembled with care by Mrs. Ripley, the great old 30s, 40s, and 50s librarian.

It’s worth checking out– I lobbied to save both it and the “Evans Collection” of D.H. Lawrence. They almost got sold a few years ago. Although, a lot of the uncatalogued ephemera in both of them got tossed out.

Over the years Mrs. Ripley also put together a phenomenal collection of Californiana. Really incredible.

Now almost all gone. Some remnants were packed off to Buena Vista– like what’s left of the “Western Collection” from Central after they enlarged their offices.
