PLEASE VOTE YES ON MEASURE N TO REPEAL THE UTILITY USERS TAX
    City of Glendale Primary Election
    Tuesday, June 7, 2016

The Glendale City Manager makes more than the Governor of California and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff!

    Scott Ochoa
    Glendale City Manager
    Annual total pay 2014: $259,621
Responsible for directing, planning and organizing all administrative activities of the City.

    Edmund G. Brown
    Governor of California
    Annual total pay 2014: $169,559
    (does not include housing allowance)
Holds supreme executive power of the California State government, Commander-in-chief of the California National Guard and the California State Military Reserve and responsible for ensuring that state laws are enforced.

    General Joseph Dunford, Jr.
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff
    Annual total pay 2014: $243,162
    (does not include housing allowance)
Highest ranking military officer in the United States Armed Forces, four-star general, principal military advisor to the President, the National Security Council, the Homeland Security Council and the Secretary of Defense.

Remember that not only are taxpayers paying for the gold-plated salaries and benefits of Glendale city employees, but we will be paying up to 90% of both for the rest of their lives.

The spending on these retirement costs are bankrupting the City with ever increasing debt which could be as high as $1.4 billion! (www.pensiontracker.org)

The fiscal policies of California’s government on all levels threaten the future of our State. Uncontrolled growth in the size and cost of local and state government has us on a trajectory of fiscal and economic collapse. Because our current legislative process is broken, Californians have no choice but to employ the local and state initiative process to reduce the size of government and restore fiscal sanity. If we act now, we can change the political debate and create a genuine consensus for fiscal responsibility and the economic promise of our Golden State.

Glendale residents, Bill Taliaferro and John Voors are proponents of Measure N and are members of the Glendale Tax Limitation Committee, a chapter of the California Tax Limitation Committee (CTLC). CTLC is a grassroots coalition of citizens throughout Southern California who are working together to bring fiscal responsibility to their city governments. We seek to reduce extravagant salaries and benefits that promote income inequality between the citizens and government employees and that are bankrupting our cities.

    The solution is simple:
Make modest cuts to city employee salaries
Pay off debt and pension obligations, and maintain a balanced budget
Move city employees over to 401(k) retirement plans
Call for city council candidates not to accept campaign contributions from unions and special interests

Total expenditures are up 40% from $569.6 million to $797.8 million
    Budget surpluses skyrocketing:
Annual surpluses of total revenues over surpluses were more than double the $17.5 million in Utility Tax revenue they will lose if the tax is repealed.
Total budget surplus 2015: $37 million
Total budget surplus 2014: $43.8 million
    Pay and benefits skyrocketing (www.TransparentCalifornia.com):
Median pay for full-time city employees was 83% higher than median pay for full-time employed residents ($82,831 vs. $45,235)
The City Manager received a 16% pay increase in 2015 from $306,434 to approximately $354,000 (to put this into perspective, the pay and benefits of the Governor of California was only $212,640 in 2014.)

    Pension Debt (www.PensionTracker.org):
Glendale taxpayers are obligated to pay city employees most of their pay and benefits for the rest of their lives after they retire. This debt is threatening to bankrupt the City. We believe the City is understating this debt:
CalPers estimates current pension debt – $400 million
Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research estimate – $1.4 billion

Glendale is on it and Burbank needs to be on it next –
END THE UTILITY USER TAX THEFT FROM THE PUBLIC

    • semichorus

Cynthia Cleary makes over $200,000 total? To hell with that.

I agree– these people make way too much. And you should see their pensions.

These kind of salaries also lead to a circle-the-wagons protection racket whenever problems develop. Which they always do.

      Burn down the Mission!

Burbank btw got their UTT into the Charter.

AND ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST

Sports Authority notified the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Wilmington, Del., earlier this week that the company would not be able to reorganize and would pursue a sale instead.

Most of the company’s assets will go up for auction May 16. While buyers could emerge who would keep the doors open in at least some locations, it’s possible that all 450 stores could be liquidated.

  3. CornFused

    Obscene.

  4. chad

Meanwhile, Walmart supposedly hired 300 employees for its Burbank location. Pretty damned depressing.

    • Denny

      What’s to be depressed about?
Walmart is Opening a NEW Store, adding NEW jobs.
They OWN the land & buildings, not a LEASE.
The sales will generate Sales TAXES.
The Property Taxes are based on the Land, and the Improvements.
      Compare that with Sports Authority..

      • Phil

        Hadn’t thought about that.
Sports Authority was a Tenant, no new property taxes.
Sales were down. Less sales taxes.
Walmart bought their land & buildings from Sears.
        New tax assessments.
        More improvements. More property taxes.
Sales are from an additional store in their chain, and an additional store in Burbank. More sales taxes.

NOT feeling depressed, except for those who will spend more
        somewhere else.
