Don’t ask us how we know, but expect big news next weekend about the Kodak Theatre.
Kodak doesn’t want to subsidize it any more under their bankruptcy proceedings, and so it’s going to be renamed by a new benefactor.
She’s already getting the Jean Hersholt Award that night (*&!!*%*$##!!!) and so nothing will be a surprise. It’ll sure fit in with her big party– and the general decline of the American film industry.

I hate naming rights- it cheapens the honor of the distinction. Kodak is an important name in the world, in the film biz, and even if they are bankrupt, I think it would be the right thing to name that theater permanently after the company.
Indeed but the developer/owner needs to dough. The fact that Oprah might name this makes we want to walk down to Hollywood and Highland in my bare feet, assume the lotus position and light myself on fire with nitrate film stock.
Don’t do it. No one would notice.
Or they’d throw a bunch of triacetate on you just to get rid of it easy. I have a feeling Oprah’s digital.
Don’t do it Chad!!!
Some “Inglorious Bastard” might try to “put-you-out”!!!
Sounds a lot like naming the airport after Bob Hope. We all know Bob Hope is a leading name in aviation history now don’t we ? Across the country, and around the globe when the name Bob Hope is uttered doesn’t everyone think aviation history ?
It’s my understanding that Kodak requested the name be changed. So, let me see, it would be alright to name the theatre after Kodak because they have done so much for the industry, but not Opra? If you would have checked your entertainment history and include her benevolent donations, you would have seen that she has given more to mankind than Kodak. I applaud the fact that she is willing to step up and help others and has never forgotten her humble beginning.
Oprah’s a phony. A total and complete asshole. The ultimate self-promoter who can’t go more than five SECONDS without turning the topic of every conversation back to herself. So she’s not going to set up a revival theater– it’ll be all about her.
Really, a more awful personality cannot be imagined. If Jesus went on her show to personally announce the end of the world the next day, Oprah would immediately turn to her off-camera staff and say, “Wasn’t I just talking about that last week? Didn’t I say Gayle that the end of the world was probably near? This is so fantastic? How’d I know?”
And then for the rest of the show she’d go on and on about her revelation.
And btw– I thought she was retiring? For almost two FUCKING years she made it the Deal of the Century that she was quitting her show. Sobbing, lamenting, the works.
And then— three months later— she starts ANOTHER ONE.
As far as Kodak goes, you’re an idiot.
Isn’t it nice to have “Billie-Jacqueline” back amongst us??
At least SOME of us have missed your “thoughtfulness”.
BJ- are you f’ing kidding me? Kodak….just check Wikipedia, I don’t have the time to explain their significance to you. It’s not about who gave more to charity, what the hell did Oprah ever invent? What communication format did she represent? Has she been around for 100 years? Good god, did your wife make you type that post? OW should give the money to retain the Kodak name, not bask in the limelight. The ultimate act of good will to mankind would be a selfless act.
I hope the Academy does a little tribute to Kodak on Sunday night. I’ve heard a rumor that they will. It seems like almost every local newscast is.
Of course Kodak’s not dead. Reorganization will allow them to downsize and spin-off the film division as an independent operation. Like they did with Kodak Chemical back in the 90s– which is doing great now.
Film is not dead.
I work in Post, and the studios are certainly running as fast as they can away from film and video tape, except for those rare individuals responsible for preservation of the classics: They go digital, but they make sure that picture and sound are recorded to film and put in the salt mines for the next 100 years. Kodak is a lot like Sony- they rested on their laurels for too long while technology changed and smaller companies leap frogged past them and grabbed market share with cooler products. It’s really hard to climb back out of that hole. Kodak makes printers now- who cares. It’s their legacy that we need to preserve. There is no special sauce like film stocks had- hard drives and playback systems are not sexy or profitable- Kodak dominated the analog world, but floundered in digital land.
As much as I despise Spielberg, I’ll give him credit for getting a damn good performance out of Oprah in The Color Purple. Oprah had some acting chops but couldn’t stay away from the Oprah Brand. The woman is more self absorbed than just about any other celeb. Maybe Martha can stand toe to toe with Oprah over branding. I can’t believe I’m actually thinking about this. Semi, shoot me.
Of course that was way before she was “Oprah.”
At least Martha Stewart sold great clothespins at Kmart. I miss those. They were really good for hanging up trims.
Wow. Do you think anyone realizes that the phrase “hanging up trims” is actually not a sexual innuendo?
Now they do.
The name Kodak is a company, and it represents the inovations and work of many people over the years that worked for and contributed to the industy through Kodak. The name Oprah is an individual who contributed a daily talk show while sitting on a couch and talking about herself and created her own Oprah network to feature more Oprah. There’s a difference.
