Council turns down gates, but evades the real issue

Even though they ended up going against staff’s recommendation, what we saw tonight at the council meeting was a classic example of city employees trying to shift the argument away from the real question at hand, and almost succeeding in getting what they wanted.

By having the “Castleman gate” vote focus solely on the red-herring issue of “safety vehicle access,” and then seemingly resolving this problem, staff led our council to think that the gate issue was a shoe-in. But in talking only about safety vehicles, what they actually accomplished was to get the council to evade the much more compelling question of whether or not a gated community belongs in Burbank under our General Plan. And the council fell right into line with this stunt.

Where was the philosophizing about gated streets? That’s all people talked about the last two times this proposal came up. It was the key question back then, and it’s still a good one.

But oddly, not one council member even noticed the readily apparent conflict with the General Plan. Instead, every one of them let their staff hijack the discussion onto terms that were set by the applicants, and it caused them an immense amount of wasted time.

We mentioned earlier that private-street gates now violate the General Plan, and that the upcoming revised Plan will soon be banning private streets on their own. So you’d think that with all the time spent formulating these new rules someone down there would have found a reason to remember them.

Dave Golonski deserves credit, though, for reminding people about the great debates of the past, and the feelings of the surrounding neighborhood regarding the mere idea of a gated community. So at least he and Dr. Gordon tried to reframe the discussion beyond the staff’s contrived and manipulative version of the facts.

And the final 4-1 vote against was the right thing to do– except that — can anyone else figure out Gary Bric’s explanation of why he voted in favor of the gates? He seemed to buy into staff’s nonsensical reasoning, that because the streets up there are already controlled, then installing new gates won’t make a difference. But if that’s the case, then why do they need them?

Everyone knows that Burbank is not a locked gates town. Speaker Maria Proctor was correct tonight: if these poor people want to be isolated, then let them go buy an island somewhere instead.

Just who wants to live in a gated neighborhood in Burbank? That’s for losers.

Gates in Burbank ? What was that all about !

That was just like watching Saturday Night Live. There are people driving all the way up there to speed around some loop street that doesn’t go anywhere. NO wait! It’s the kids of people who live there who are speeding around their loop that does not go anyplace!

Imagine that young people smoking and drinking beer on the loop thing that doesn’t go anyplace! NO wait it’s the kids that live in there smoking and throwing the beer bottles!

There is the guy who wants to be state assembly guy. Up and down like a jack in the box. He says, We know this, oh we are not sure of that he bobbs and weaves so much he was getting me dizzy! Maybe that’s why he looks worn out on the thing he sent me in the mair.

The one thing I agreed with is these people should go buy their own island someplace. Now that’s a great idea! Make this Ramani guy president of the island and leave the rest of us alone!

I’d place bets the gate people want the gate first and Ramani in Sacramento second. That way Ramani can tax the rest of us to pay for their gates and the security to open them. What a scam!

From what I saw and heard watching this all I can say is that the gates were about making a few people feel super important. Like you said not even everyone who lived there wanted them. So I sat thinking maybe the all important people wanted to gate out the less important people who live on those streets. Imagine that, please can I come in and go to my home ? Answer comes back, drive down the street and park someplace else and walk to your house.

I plan to take a drive up there to look at this place now. I hope it bothers them if their gates got people wanting to drive through and take a look at them.

Don’t worry I promise not to feed the gate people while I drive through and look.

All I could think to myself watching that meeting last night was what would Ramani do in Sacramento ?

Sorry but a representative that would write bills to shelter the rich from the poor with gates everyplace is not getting my vote.

All I could say to myself watching the gate discussion was what on earth is this.

Hearing Ramani speak in support of gats to separate the poor from the rich was so informative. Just what I want in Sacramento is someone writing laws to gate off the poor. Sorry but I can’t vote for that.

What on earth was I watching last night with this gate discussion going on for hours?

The most informative part of it was watching Ramani speak up for gates to shelter the rich from the poor.

I saw the real issue. Just what I want is someone in Sacramento with an agenda to lock out the poor with gates. Sorry but I know who I won’t be voting for after watching that.

They did the right thing to turn this down. It is not about property rights or their private property not when the rest of us can’t even have more than a 4 foot fence around the front of our property. I forgot at first but we don’t let people put fences around their own property in Burbank and these people are not some special upper class that gets what the rest of us are denied.

I looked up Sundar Ramani for Assembly and he says he wants less regulation. Isn’t a gate and a guard more regulation ?

Maybe he means less regulation so nothing stands in the way of everyone sticking gates across every road ?

They don’t make very many good decisions but turning down the gate idea was a good decision.

It was just a ploy to try to raise their falling property values.

I watched that candidate discussion thing on TV. I was speechless about what a nut case this guy named Keuroghelian is. He reminds me of why we really should not cut the programs for the mentally ill.

  11. Lee

He can’t do any worse than Golonski and the rest of the circus clowns.

  12. Tito

Councilman Golonski is just plain creepy. Not sure if they can make one worse but even one close to as bad as he is would be such bad news for the world. It could cause climate change.

  13. Sam

Hard as it might be to imagine there has got to be someone out there who can be a bigger ass than Golonski can.

Fladd, Barlow, Scott to name a few unfortunately being in charge of the investigations they will shake this off and retire with a great pensions and benefits.
